When I was a prosecutor, sometimes defendants in criminal cases would ask me, “Do I need an attorney?”. I could not advise them as a prosecutor, but I would ask them, how important to them was their case and their future.
Now as expungement and record sealing attorney, I get a similar question, “Do I need an attorney to get my criminal record expunged and sealed in Ohio?” My question in response is similar, “How important to you is your expungement and your future?”. Who would answer anything but “extremely important” to that question? I would advise them and you to work with an expungement attorney to help navigate the process of applying and obtaining an expungement. If the expungement case is not handled properly and they should lose their case, a permanent criminal record could cost them loss of career opportunities, jobs, or advances.
In most cases, you only get one shot. If you lose, it makes it very difficult legally to reapply for expungement again in the future. So working with a legal expungement lawyer who has worked with hundreds of applicants over the years is better than trying to navigate the process alone.
Over the next few blog posts, I will provide the ten reasons why you need to work with an experienced, local attorney to work through your expungement application.
